“How does that work?” Investigating and recording

In their discovery of the world, children will push and pull, poke and tear, touch and feel textures, ask questions, and sometimes take note of what they find out.

In this chapter, children watch and imitate the adults around them in daily life settings. Sometimes, children accompany adults somewhere unique to further explore their interests. In a real world setting, such as a store, farm, or doctor’s office, children can watch adults at work and ask questions about what they are doing.

Children often like to record their findings. Clipboards provide a useful way for children to make their own field sketches and notes as they discover new information. The world has so much to offer when adults can help young children investigate interesting things and extend their understanding.
