“What’s that?” Noticing and wondering

The events, people, objects, and processes that most easily hold children’s attention are those that make them curious, and about which they want to find out more. Children’s curiosity rarely needs any encouragement; they naturally have an almost insatiable appetite to know more about everything in their world.

In this chapter we see children whose attention is attracted to some event: a sound, a movement, an invitation to change course. In some cases, the attraction is strong and instantaneous. In others, it is merely fleeting.

With adults nearby, children can explore new territory. Nature lovers everywhere can share their knowledge about plants and animals, rocks, seas, rivers, fields, and forests. In urban environments, there are buildings, streets and bridges to find out about from builders, architects, and engineers.
